Chapter 20

It had been three days since his interview at the station and Daniel’s levels of paranoia had been at their highest ever. He saw the detective everywhere he went. Every knock on the door at night was the police about to kick the door in and arrest him. Whenever his boss walked in his general direction at work, he was convinced he was to be told the police wanted to speak to him. But none of that had happened.

Also convinced his phone was being traced by the police, he’d told another friend at work to tell Kyle not to text or call him under any circumstances until he’d bought a new phone—a cheap, disposal one which he now had. He and Kyle barely exchanged glances while working, keeping as big a distance as possible between them. Daniel hadn’t dared to turn on his secret laptop either, imagining the police barging in just as he was about to scroll through his private video collection. The only thing that managed to convince him he'd done the right thing was thinking of his cousin and his actions perhaps helping to trace her.

His parents had reassured him he’d done the right thing, even if it did mean he might be under scrutiny by the police for a while, but if he’d done wrong himself, he had nothing to worry about, they said. But that was easy to say when you didn’t have hundreds of illegal images and videos on your laptop that could lead to a very unwelcome stay in prison for a while. Paedophiles, he knew, were the lowest of the low as far as inmates were concerned. He had visions of being unable to sit down for a week after they got their hands on him, having to stuff his arsehole with cotton wool to stop the bleeding.

That had been three days ago though and his confidence was starting to return. As was his desire to rewatch one of his favourite videos. He had urges and they needed taking care of. It was Wednesday afternoon, he’d finished work for the day and had his new phone in his hand as he sat in his bedroom drinking a can of beer. Time to phone Kyle, see if he had any new material.

Once Daniel had convinced him he didn’t have a detective sitting beside him recording their conversation or that he was wearing a wire tap, Kyle finally agreed to talk. It took some convincing too—it seemed Daniel wasn’t the only one that had been paranoid these last few days and for good reason.

“But how do you know you’re not being followed?” asked Kyle. “Logic suggests they’ll be following you everywhere you go, to find out who gave you the photo. In other words, me.”

“They haven’t even been back to question me about it. They know I won’t talk and besides, I gave them the only piece of evidence they have about Angela’s whereabouts. They’ll be too busy examining the photo to look for where it was taken.
